The further you are from the Wi-Fi router, the weaker the signal becomes. Obstacles such as walls and furniture can also weaken the signal as it travels through them. Ideally, you would want your Wi-Fi router in the same room as your PC. If you are attempting to cover large distances across a business or household, a Wi-Fi extender or "Mesh Wireless Network" may be needed to cover these distances.
Additionally, if your desktop motherboard has an integrated Wi-Fi controller, please make sure that the antennas are connected. Typically, there will be two gold colored, circular plugs on the rear of your PC. The antennas would need to be plugged into these inputs. Some PC's do not have integrated wireless capabilities. In this case, your PC may have come with a USB Wi-Fi adapter. This would need to be inserted into an available USB port for wireless capabilities.
